Aplectrum hyemale

Common Name: Puttyroot, Adam-and-Eve
Scientific Name: Aplectrum hyemale
Family: Orchidaceae (Orchids)
Blooming Period: May - June
Taken at: McCormick's Creek State Park, 5/15/99

Grows in mesic forests, frequently in ravines or along streams or rivers. An interesting characteristic is that the photosynthetic leaf of the plant emerges in the fall and stays out all winter long. When the flower shoot comes up in spring, the leaf withers away.
